$5,000 “Elevator” Grant Awarded
Release Date: 27 JAN 2004

DE QUEEN – Bill Taylor, Chair of the Division of Business and Agriculture at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas, announced today that the Division’s 2004 Small Enterprises Accounting Information Improvement Project Elevator Grant Proposal was funded at the recent United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) competition in Dallas. USASBE’s mission is “to advance knowledge and foster business development through entrepreneurship education and research.”

Working with area Chambers of Commerce and the CCCUA’s Spotlight Business Accelerator for Entrepreneurs (SBAE) Program, the Elevator Grant Project will provide information and ideas on how to better use the company’s accounting data to new or existing locally owned businesses in the college’s 3-county service area.

The process begins with a review of the basic elements of a company’s accounting system, and proceeds to give specific examples of how to analyze financial statements to improve business operations. Taylor said, “This project will attempt to educate new or existing locally-owned businesses on the importance of establishing accounting and financial goals for periodic review and revision. It will help participating owners find appropriate comparative industry data.

Taylor, holds an MBA and is also an inactive CPA. His background includes 19 years of ownership in the retail grocery business, and work as a cost consultant serving clients in 5 southeastern states.

He said, “The faculty of Cossatot’s Division of Business and Agriculture want to help all the small business operations in our area to be more successful. This grant will allow us to work individually and confidentially with business owners to improve their operating results.”
